AnthroFilms Scadia documentary logo & promo materials

AnthroFilms commissioned a logo and promotional materials for its documentary, Scadia: The Known World. The film features the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval re-creation group.

An anachronistic approach was taken to design the logo. Hundreds of years of illuminated initials and block print letters were researched to design this custom S, which was then carved on a linoleum block (see time-lapse video) and printed by hand. It incorporates the group’s triskele in the top terminal, a yin/yang symbol to represent the balance between mundane and persona, and a lacertine knot in the spine to represent the merging of modern and medieval. The simple “S” t-shirt is a nod to Super-Man, another enactment of alter egos. The custom “S” logo was also incorporated into a illuminated manuscript design for a t-shirt featuring the lyrics of the group’s most popular song. The logo was also produced as a commemorative pin, which serves as a token for exchange among Scadians.

GDUSA (Graphic Design USA) American Graphic Design Award Winner, 2015
For five decades, Graphic Design USA has sponsored competitions to spotlight areas of excellence and opportunity for creative professionals. GDUSA’s American Graphic Design Awards is the original and flagship competition, open to all in the community: design firms, ad agencies, corporations, non-profits, institutions, and more. It honors outstanding work of all kinds and across all media. The competition annually attracts nearly 10,000 entrants, with fewer than 15% selected for awards. (Note: my work won two awards in this competition, a feat which the publisher describes as “a rare case.”)

GDUSA Logo Award Publication
The Scadia logo was published both digitally on the GDUSA website as well as in print in GDUSA, a monthly news and information magazine for and about the professional designer (Nov/Dec 2015).
